Repair or replace: the call you make in the first few minutes
Most people phone about a heater with the same question. Is this worth fixing? The honest answer depends on three things. Where the water is coming from, how old the tank is, and whether the problem is a cheap part or the tank itself.
A failed thermostat, element or gas control valve is a repair. A tank that is leaking from its body is not, because the steel shell has failed from the inside. We tell you which one you have before any work begins, and we quote a clear price either way.
Signals that lean repair and signals that lean replace
Neither column is a rule. Together they show where the decision tends to land.
| What you see | Leans toward repair | Leans toward replace |
|---|---|---|
| Water pooling under the tank | Drips from a fitting, valve or drain valve | Water seeping from the tank body or bottom seam |
| No hot water | Pilot out, tripped breaker, bad thermostat or element | Tank is old and also leaking or rumbling loudly |
| Lukewarm water that runs out quickly | Failed element or dip tube | Heavy sediment and an aging tank |
| Rusty hot water only | Anode rod worn, tank otherwise sound | Rust at the tank seams or corroded base |
| Repeated repairs | Single fix on a younger unit | Third repair in a short stretch |
If replacement is the answer, see Water Heater Replacement for what that visit involves.
Gas smell near the heater? Leave first, then call
If you smell natural gas, evacuate the home immediately and call SoCalGas from a safe location at 1-800-427-2200. SoCalGas also says to call 911 if the leak may endanger life or you cannot reach them.
Do not flip light switches, use a lighter, or try to relight a pilot. Once SoCalGas has cleared the home, call our dispatch and we can look at the heater.

Water heater leak: shut off and read where it comes from
Close the cold water valve on top of the heater, then turn the power breaker off for an electric unit or the gas control to pilot or off for a gas one. Put a bucket under the drip and a towel across the floor. Do not touch the tank if water is spreading toward outlets.
A drip at the temperature and pressure relief valve discharge pipe can mean high pressure or a worn valve. A drip at the supply connections is often a tightened fitting. Water coming from the bottom of the tank is the pattern that usually ends in replacement. Photograph it so you can describe it clearly on the phone.
No hot water: the usual causes, by heater type
On a gas tank, the pilot or thermocouple is the first suspect. On an electric tank, a tripped breaker or failed heating element is. A lukewarm result usually points to the lower element or heavy sediment, not a dead heater.
The City of Pico Rivera's 2023 Water Consumer Confidence Report puts average tap water hardness at about 10.2 grains per gallon. That is mineral content that can build up in a tank. If your heater is old and rumbles when it heats, ask us about sediment before you spend on small parts.
Gas, electric and hybrid heaters: what repair looks like on each
The repair list changes with the type of heater. This is what we look at first.
What moves the cost of a heater repair
Four things tend to decide the invoice on a tank repair.
Part and availability
A thermostat is a small item. A gas control valve or a branded element costs more and may need ordering.
Fuel type
Gas work involves venting and gas connections. Electric work is mostly parts and wiring checks.
Age of the unit
A repair on an old tank is a judgment call. We tell you if the part cost approaches the value left in the tank.
Access and code items
Tight closets, old shutoffs or missing drain pans add time to a visit.
Before we arrive at the heater
A few minutes of prep means less water damage and a faster diagnosis.
- Shut the cold water valve above the heater.
- Turn off power at the breaker or set the gas control to pilot.
- Clear a path to the tank and move stored items back.
- Note the age and make from the data plate.
- Write down when the hot water stopped.
- Call the 24/7 line and tell us where the water is showing.
If the heater sits in a garage or closet with no drain, mention that. It changes what we bring.

Questions we hear most
Yes. Overnight and weekend calls reach a live dispatcher. A no-hot-water call that is not a flood may get a same-day slot when available.
Call the line and describe the leak so we can bring the right parts.
It depends on where the water comes from. A leaking fitting or valve is a repair. Water from the tank body almost always means replacement.
Leave the home and call SoCalGas from outside at 1-800-427-2200. Call 911 if the leak may endanger anyone or you cannot reach SoCalGas.
Start with the breaker. If it is on, a failed thermostat or heating element is the next suspect. We test each before replacing anything.
We handle the water-side parts. Heat pump components may need the manufacturer's service. We tell you which at the start of the visit.
No. Turn off the water supply and the power or gas control. A leaking tank can fail suddenly and flood a room.
Yes. We name the price after diagnosis and before we pick up a tool.
