What decides the cost of a new water heater
Here is what sits behind the number, in the order it usually matters.
Tank failed overnight: the first hour
Water spreading from the base of the tank means the steel has given out. Close the cold supply valve, switch the heater off at the breaker or gas control, and open a hot tap in the house to relieve pressure. Mop what you can and move belongings aside.
If you smell natural gas, leave the house and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from outside. Then call our 24/7 line. In many cases we can move on a same-day or after-hours replacement when available, and we will tell you plainly what the schedule looks like.
Tank, tankless or heat pump: the options to compare
If time allows, think about these. If the tank is flooding, we can swap like for like and revisit later.
Standard tank
The simplest swap. It fits the existing space and connections and keeps the visit short.
Tankless
Hot water on demand and a smaller footprint, with more involved gas or electrical needs. Read about Tankless Water Heater before deciding.
Heat pump (hybrid)
A different kind of unit with its own space and power needs. Ask us whether it suits your home. We do not make price or rebate claims here.
Larger or smaller tank
If the family has grown or shrunk since the last install, this is the time to resize.
Tank down and no hot water?
Describe the unit and where the water is coming from and we will line up the swap. Reach the 24/7 line for the first available visit.
Same-spot swap versus changing the setup
The difference drives time, paperwork and cost.
| Question | Same-location change-out | Changing type or location |
|---|---|---|
| Typical scope | Remove old unit, set new one, reconnect | New lines, venting or electrical may be added |
| Permit path | May qualify for the city's Express Permit | Ask Building and Safety, rules vary |
| Time on site | Shortest | Longer, sometimes a second visit |
| Best when | The tank failed and you need hot water back | You are changing fuel, size or room |
See Water Heater Installation for planned installs that are not urgent.
Permits and the City of Pico Rivera Express Permit
The City of Pico Rivera lists an Express Permit for residential water heater change-outs in the same location, and also for tankless change-outs in the same location. The contractor must provide an active California State Contractor's License and City business license information.
That means the contractor, not you, supplies the licence details. Other permit rules vary, so ask the Pico Rivera Building and Safety division. City Hall is at 6615 Passons Blvd, open Monday to Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
What happens on replacement day
A same-location swap follows a simple order.
- 1
Isolate and drain
We shut the water and fuel, then drain what is left in the old tank.
- 2
Remove the old heater
We disconnect, haul it out and check shutoffs, flex connectors and venting.
- 3
Set and connect the new unit
The tank is placed on a drain pan, strapped and connected, with a discharge line to a safe spot.
- 4
Test and walk you through
We refill, check for leaks, test gas or electrical, and show you the shutoffs. Older water pipes nearby may be noted for later, see Repiping.
Clear the space before the crew arrives
A cleared area saves time on site.
- Empty a three-foot path to the heater.
- Move stored boxes and paint cans.
- Know where the main shutoff and breaker are.
- Take a photo of the data plate.
- Have the permit or HOA contact ready if one applies.
- Call to book the earliest slot.
Standards and sources behind this page
Permit requirements come from the City of Pico Rivera Express Permit criteria, and gas safety guidance from SoCalGas. For code questions, the California Plumbing Code governs water heater installs in the state, and the City of Pico Rivera's Building and Safety division answers permit questions.
Questions we hear most
Yes. A tank that fails overnight or on a weekend gets a call back from dispatch, and a replacement can be scheduled same-day when available.
Call the line and tell us the make and where it is leaking.
Pico Rivera has an Express Permit for same-location water heater change-outs. The contractor must give the city an active California contractor licence and business licence information. Other cases vary, so ask Building and Safety.
Often yes, but tankless units can need different gas or electrical work. We check before we quote.
It is a fair question to ask. We can talk through space, power and fit for your home. We do not make rebate or savings promises.
A leak from the tank body means replacement. A bad thermostat or valve may be a repair. See Water Heater Repair for the signs.
The price, the scope and any code items we found. You approve all of it before we start.
Hot water by the end of the visit
A failed tank does not need to turn into a long outage. Call our dispatch line and we will set up the swap.
