Pico Rivera water and your heat exchanger
Pico Rivera's 2023 water quality report gives an average hardness of 174.4 mg/L, ranging from 121 up to 212. In grains per gallon, that is about 10.2. On the Cal Water scale, anything from 150 to 300 ppm counts as hard.
Hard water carries dissolved minerals, and Cal Water's report says it may build up inside pipes or water heaters. A tankless unit heats water through narrow passages, so buildup there matters. That is the reason we treat a flush as routine care, not an upsell.
Test your tap before you pick a schedule
Your water may not match the citywide average. Part of town is served by Pico Water District instead of the City Water Division, so check which one bills you and read that utility's annual report.
You can also buy a simple hardness test strip and test your tap yourself. Bring the result to the visit and we will set the flush interval around it.
Tankless flush and descale, step by step
This is the usual order of a descale visit. Your manufacturer's instructions come first if they differ.
- 1
Shut off and isolate
We close the gas or power and the water supply, then open the service valves on the unit.
- 2
Connect the flush loop
A pump and hoses circulate a descaling solution through the heat exchanger.
- 3
Circulate and watch
We let the solution work, then check the color and clarity of what comes back.
- 4
Rinse and clean the filter
Fresh water flushes the loop, and the inlet screen gets cleaned.
- 5
Restart and test
We return the unit to service, check flow and temperature, and note the date for your records.
Book a flush before the next cold snap
Mineral buildup is easier to clear before it restricts flow. Call {phone} and we will find a time that suits your schedule.
Signs your tankless unit needs attention
These symptoms often point to buildup or a blocked screen. A technician has to confirm the cause.
| What you notice | Possible cause | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Water runs hot, then cold, then hot | Scale restricting flow | Flow rate, inlet screen, heat exchanger |
| Weak hot water at one fixture | Clogged aerator or screen | Fixture aerator and the unit's inlet filter |
| Error code on the display | Exhaust, flame or sensor issue | Code history, venting path and sensors |
| Louder than it used to be | Mineral buildup or fan wear | Heat exchanger and fan operation |
No hot water at all is a repair visit. See Water Heater Repair or call (562) 488-9614 for 24/7 dispatch.
What affects the cost of tankless service
Your quote shows the price up front. Four things move it.
Thinking about switching to tankless
These are questions we answer on site. We do not assume the answers from a catalog.
Is the gas line big enough?
Tankless burners draw a lot of fuel at once. We measure the run and check the line serving the unit.
Where does the exhaust go?
We look at wall and roof options, clearances and the condition of anything we plan to reuse.
Is there power nearby?
Most units need an outlet for the controls. We confirm one is close and protected.
Will it keep up with your home?
We ask how many fixtures run together, then compare that to the unit's flow ratings.
If the answers point to a tank instead, we say so. Our Water Heater Installation page lays out the tank scope.
Permits for a tankless change out
The City of Pico Rivera has an Express Permit for a residential tankless water heater change out in the same location. The City asks the contractor to supply license and business license details with the application.
Swapping a tank for a tankless unit, or moving the unit, can be a bigger change. Ask Pico Rivera Building and Safety at (562) 942-2000 what applies to your address.
Before the technician arrives
A few minutes of prep saves time on site.
- Clear a path to the unit and about an arm's length around it.
- Find the model label and any error codes on the display.
- Note when the last flush was done, even a rough guess.
- Write down which fixtures run hot and cold.
- Have your hardness test result or water report handy.
Not sure where to start? Call {phone} and describe what the unit is doing. If you are comparing replacement options, Water Heater Replacement has the details.

Questions we hear most
Your manufacturer sets the baseline interval, and harder water may call for more. Pico Rivera's 2023 average of about 10.2 grains per gallon is in the hard range. We set the interval from your unit and your tap.
A pump circulates a descaling solution through the heat exchanger, followed by a rinse and a filter cleaning. Service valves on the unit make the job straightforward.
Some owners do, if service valves are installed and the manual covers it. We are happy to do it, or to check your work. Call us with the model number.
Pico Rivera offers an Express Permit for a tankless water heater change out in the same location. For other changes, ask Building and Safety.
Softening lowers hardness, but it has its own trade-offs. See Water Softener and Filtration and test your tap first.
Note the code, turn the unit off if you smell gas, and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from a safe place. For a non-emergency fault, call us with the code.
Keep the hot water steady
Tell us the model and the last service date. Call {phone} and ask about a same-day appointment when available.
