What the fizz can and cannot do
Baking soda and vinegar react to make carbon dioxide, water and a mild salt solution. That bubbling can loosen a thin layer of soap film or food residue near the drain opening. It does not break up hair mats, grease plugs, roots or a solid object.

Clog type versus what actually works

A clog that returns within days usually means the cause is deeper than the fizz can reach.

A careful attempt costs almost nothing. Keep expectations small and stop if water starts to rise.

Remove standing water
Bail out as much as you can. The mix needs contact with the drain, not a full basin to dilute it.

Pour in baking soda, then vinegar
Use about a half cup of baking soda followed by a half cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain with a plug or wet cloth for the first few minutes so the fizz works downward.

Wait and flush with hot tap water
Give it about 15 minutes, then run hot water from the tap. Plain tap hot water, not a boiling kettle, is the safer choice.

Test, then stop
If the water drains normally, you are done. If it does not, do not mix in chemical drain products on top of this, since leftovers can splash on whoever comes next.

Pico Rivera water and housing: what it means for you
Hardness is the local number that matters here. In its 2023 Consumer Confidence Report, the City of Pico Rivera lists an average total hardness of 174.4 mg/L, with a range from 121 to 212 mg/L. On the scale Cal Water uses in its own report, that average falls in the hard band, which runs 150 to 300 ppm.
Hard water leaves mineral scale on faucet aerators, showerheads and the inside of pipes. Vinegar does dissolve light scale on removable parts like aerators, so soaking those is a sensible use. It will not clear scale from inside a wall, and that is one more reason to move to a Drain Cleaning visit when a drain stays slow.

Boiling water
Very hot or boiling water can stress a porcelain toilet or sink and may soften some plastic pipe or fittings. Use hot tap water as a default.

Garbage disposals

Unknown pipe material
If you are unsure what the line is made of, skip repeated treatments and ask for a camera look. Guessing is how a small clog becomes a bigger repair.
When to put the vinegar away and call
The home remedy has done all it can if you see any of these.
