Is jetting the right tool? Match the clog to the method
This is how we decide, and it takes a camera look more often than a guess.
| What is in the line | Jetting? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen grease and soap film | Usually yes | Water scours the pipe wall, where a cable only opens a hole. |
| Mineral scale | Often yes | Pressure can remove buildup that narrows the pipe. |
| Soft root mass | Sometimes | Water cuts roots, but a cable may be quicker. See Sewer Line Cleaning. |
| Single solid obstruction | Often no | A cable or retrieval tool may get it faster. |
| Cracked, offset or collapsed pipe | No | Water will not fix damage. See Sewer Line Repair. |
Three jobs where jetting earns its place
These are the clogs where the extra step pays off.
Grease that keeps coming back
If a line clears for a few weeks and then slows again, the film on the wall is likely still there. Jetting removes it instead of punching through it.
Scale that narrows the bore
Mineral buildup grows slowly. Local tap water has an average hardness of 174.4 mg/L per the City of Pico Rivera's 2023 water report, about 10.2 grains per gallon, so buildup is a reasonable thing to check for.
Roots that need a thorough clean
Jetting can clear a root mass and the debris around it. Roots still return if the gap remains, so we look at the joint on camera.
Backed up right now? Do this before jetting is even on the table
Stop using drains, keep people out of the wet area, and leave chemical openers alone. Our 24/7 dispatch handles calls overnight and on weekends, and same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows. (562) 488-9614 is the number.
Tell us which fixture is lowest and whether you know where the cleanout is. We usually open the line first, then camera it to decide whether jetting is the right second step.
Not sure jetting is right for your line?
We decide from what the camera shows. Ring dispatch and we will look before recommending the tool.
When jetting is the wrong tool
Water pressure is not a repair. If the camera shows a cracked or offset pipe, a bellied section or a collapse, jetting can wash debris out for a day and leave the real problem in place. In those cases we move to repair options and explain why.
Old pipe is the other reason to be careful. Pressure is chosen to suit the pipe, and we set it conservatively on lines that look fragile. If we do not trust a line to take it, we will say so and use a gentler method.
Camera before and after: what you see
The camera is how you know the money was well spent.
- 1
Look first
We run a camera to see the buildup, roots or damage before choosing pressure and nozzle.
- 2
Set the pressure for the pipe
Older or thinner lines get a lower setting and a closer watch.
- 3
Jet in passes
We work from the cleanout toward the street connection and pull back, scouring as we go.
- 4
Look again
A second camera pass shows the wall after cleaning, and we compare it to the first.
- 5
Show you the result
You see the before and after footage, plus any damage the cleaning uncovered.
Commercial kitchens and industrial corridors
Restaurants, food prep shops and other grease producers load their drain lines faster than a home does. If you run a kitchen in Pico Rivera or in nearby industrial areas of Commerce, periodic jetting can be a maintenance decision rather than an emergency one, so call us before a Friday dinner rush rather than during it.
Our Commercial Plumbing work covers after-hours calls for businesses, and we can set a visit before opening to avoid lost service.
What affects the price of a jetting visit
You get a clear price before work starts.
Before we jet your line
A few minutes of prep makes the visit smoother.
- Locate the cleanout and clear the area around it. If you cannot find it, call dispatch and we will help.
- Keep pets and children away from the work area.
- Note which drains are slow and how long the problem has been developing.
- For a kitchen, tell us the busiest hours so we can plan around them.
- Mention any past repairs or known damage to the line.
Standards and sources behind this page
Jetting pressure and nozzle choice follow the equipment maker's guidelines and the condition of the pipe seen on camera.
Questions we hear most
Yes. We dispatch 24/7. If a line is backing up after hours, we open it first and decide on jetting after the camera look. Same-day appointments are offered when the schedule allows.
It can if pressure is wrong for the pipe. We set pressure to suit the line and decline jetting if the pipe looks too fragile.
No. Jetting cleans. A crack or collapse needs repair, and the camera tells us which one you have.
For grease and scale, often yes. For a single obstruction, a cable may be quicker. The choice depends on what is in the line.
It cleans the pipe wall, but grease and roots can return if the cause remains. We suggest an interval based on what we saw.
Kitchens produce grease, so many choose a regular schedule. Ask us what the camera shows and we will recommend an interval. Call us to set it up.
Yes. You see the line before and after, and we explain what each shows.
Pick the tool the pipe needs
A camera look takes the guesswork out of it. Call our 24/7 line and we will tell you if jetting fits your line.
