Toilet overflowing right now? Shut the angle stop first
Turn the angle stop clockwise until it stops. It is the small oval or round handle on the supply line behind the toilet, and closing it ends the refill that keeps feeding a bowl at the rim. If the handle is frozen or weeps when you turn it, close the main water valve for the house instead.
Do not flush again, and do not keep plunging a bowl that is near the top. Lift the tank lid and press the flapper down so the tank stops dumping into the bowl. Pull up rugs, then call our overnight line. We book same-day visits when available and take after-hours calls for floods that will not stop.
A toilet that only hisses or runs on can wait for a daytime visit. Sewage in the tub or several fixtures gurgling at once points to the line, not the bowl, so see Drain Cleaning and call right away.
Four things a failing toilet does and what each one usually means
The sound or the puddle tells us most of what we need before we open the tank.
It runs after the flush
Water keeps trickling into the bowl or the tank refills every few minutes. The flapper is the usual cause, followed by a fill valve that no longer shuts off.
It hisses all day
A hiss means the fill valve is leaking past its seat. This is a small part and a quick swap in most tanks.
Water at the base
A damp ring around the bowl points to the wax seal or the closet bolts. Stop using the toilet, because a failed seal soaks the subfloor over time.
The bowl rocks
A bowl that shifts under you has loose bolts or a damaged flange. Rocking breaks the seal, so this one is worth fixing promptly.
Run the food coloring test before you buy a single part
The EPA suggests a simple check for a silent tank leak. Drop a little food coloring into the tank, wait 10 minutes without flushing, and look at the bowl. If color shows up there, water is slipping past the flapper.
The EPA also advises replacing a toilet flapper at least every five years. That is a cheap part that tends to be forgotten, so ask us to look at it on any toilet visit. A quiet tank leak never shows on the floor, but it shows on the bill. If your bill jumped and you cannot find a cause, our Leak Detection page explains the next step.
Toilet running over or leaking through the floor?
Dispatch is open 24/7, including overnight. Call (562) 488-9614 and tell us whether the angle stop closed so we bring the right parts.
Repair or replace: how the decision usually falls
We tell you which side of the line your toilet is on before any work starts.
| Condition | Usually repair | Usually replace |
|---|---|---|
| Running or hissing | New flapper or fill valve | Tank is cracked or badly stained inside |
| Leak at the base | New wax seal and bolts | Bowl is cracked or the porcelain is chipped at the base |
| Rocking bowl | Reset and secure the flange | Flange and floor are damaged beyond a simple fix |
| Weak flush | Clean rim holes, adjust the tank | Repeated clogs on an old, low-performing bowl |
| Several repairs in a year | Fix the cheapest failing part | Parts for the model are hard to find |
Ask about haul-away of the old bowl when you book.
What a 1957 median home means for your toilet
The Census ACS 2024 estimates put the median home in Pico Rivera at 1957, and 86.2 percent of the 17,352 units were built before 1980. In houses that old, the toilet may be a replacement from a past remodel or the original fixture. Ask us the age of the one you have, because an original bowl with a cracked tank is a replace call, not a repair call.
The city's 2023 water quality report puts average hardness near 174.4 mg/L, roughly 10.2 grains per gallon. Cal Water's published scale puts that range in the hard band, and says hard water may lead to mineral buildup in pipes or water heaters. We look for crusty deposits inside the tank, since that can shorten the life of small parts. Owners in Commerce with similar housing can use the same checks.
What moves the price of a toilet job
Four things set the number you hear before the work starts.
While you wait for the technician
Five minutes of prep saves time on the visit.
- Close the angle stop behind the bowl. If it will not turn, tell us when you call the dispatch line.
- Take a photo of the leak area and the tank interior before you touch anything.
- Clear the space around the toilet so the technician can reach the bolts and supply line.
- Move towels and bath mats out of the wet zone, and keep power strips off the floor.
- Note when the problem began and whether other drains in the house are slow.
If the toilet is clogged and nothing else is slow, tell us that too. A single-fixture clog is a faster fix than a line problem, and see Plumbing Installation if you want to upgrade the fixture, and Faucet Repair if a sink nearby is dripping too.

Questions we hear most
Yes. Dispatch runs 24/7, so overflow and leak calls get answered at midnight or on a Sunday. Close the angle stop first, then call (562) 488-9614.
Use the EPA food coloring test. Add a few drops to the tank, do not flush, and check the bowl after 10 minutes. Color in the bowl means water is leaking past the flapper.
The EPA recommends replacing a toilet flapper at least every five years. If you are not sure how old yours is, ask during any visit and we will check it.
It is not an overflow emergency, but it should not wait long. A rocking bowl breaks the wax seal, and a leak at the base can soak the floor. Stop using it and book a visit.
If one cheap part has failed and the bowl and tank are sound, repair makes sense. If the porcelain is cracked or you have had repeated repairs, replacement usually makes more sense. We explain both before work begins.
Probably not. When more than one fixture is affected, the blockage is usually in the drain line. Call (562) 488-9614 and we will look at the line first.
Get the toilet fixed and the floor dry
Whether it is a midnight overflow or a daytime hiss, reach dispatch and we will line up the right repair or replacement.
