How to Install a Garbage Disposal in a Pico Rivera Kitchen

A like-for-like disposal swap is a realistic afternoon job for a careful homeowner when the power is off and the old unit comes out cleanly. This guide covers the flange, the drain, the dishwasher knockout and the point where hiring a plumber is the smarter move.

The short answer, before you pick up a wrench

If you are replacing an existing disposal with a similar one, a handy homeowner can do it in a few hours. Most InSinkErator-style units use a mounting ring system built for exactly that swap. You need a helper to hold the unit, a plan for the power, and patience with the cabinet under the sink.

Hire a plumber when there is no disposal there now, when the sink has no switch or outlet, when the drain already runs slow, or when you find a leak you cannot trace. A first-time install adds wiring and sometimes a drain change. If any of that sounds unfamiliar, call our dispatch line and talk it through before you cut anything loose.

Power off and sink cleared first

Do these before the old unit gets touched. None of them take long and each one prevents a common injury or mess.

  • Flip the wall switch off, then turn off the breaker for the disposal circuit and put tape over it.
  • Check the unit's wires or plug with a non-contact voltage tester before you touch any connection.
  • Keep your hand out of the grinding chamber. If the unit is jammed, use the hex socket on the bottom or a wooden spoon handle.
  • Empty the cabinet, lay down a towel and set a bucket under the trap.
  • Take a photo of the existing wiring and drain layout so you can match it later.

If you cannot tell which breaker feeds the disposal, stop there. Guessing at circuits is how people get hurt, so ring a licensed plumber instead of testing your luck.

From old unit out to new unit running

The order matters. The flange goes in before the unit, and the dishwasher plug comes out before the first test run.

  1. 1

    Remove the old disposal

Disconnect the discharge tube from the trap, then twist the unit free of its mounting ring and lower it onto a towel. Disconnect the wires inside the cover plate once you have confirmed the power is dead.

  2. 2

    Reset the mounting flange

Loosen the lower ring and bolts, push the old flange up through the sink and scrape away the old putty. Press fresh plumber's putty or the supplied gasket under the new flange, seat it and tighten the ring evenly so the putty squeezes out all around.

  3. 3

Hang and wire the new unit

Lift the unit onto the mounting ring and twist it until it locks. Connect the wires to match the maker's instructions and your photo, tuck them into the cover plate and close it.

  4. 4

    Knock out the dishwasher plug

If a dishwasher drains into the disposal, the inlet nipple has a plastic plug inside. Tap it out with a screwdriver and hammer, then fish the plug out of the chamber. Skip this and the dishwasher will not drain, which is the classic mistake.

  5. 5

Connect the drain and dishwasher hose

Fit the discharge tube to the trap, line up the pieces and hand-tighten the slip nuts. Clamp the dishwasher hose on and loop it up under the counter as the dishwasher maker shows.

  6. 6

    Test with power and water

Restore the breaker, run cold water and switch the unit on. Hold a dry paper towel to every joint, then run a full sink of water through to check the trap.

Local note

Pico Rivera tap water and your drain fittings

Pico Rivera tap water comes from local deep groundwater wells, and the city's 2023 Consumer Confidence Report puts its average total hardness at 174.4 mg/L, about 10.2 grains per gallon. A Cal Water report defines 150 to 300 ppm as hard, so a kitchen here is working with harder water.

Cal Water adds that hard water may lead to mineral buildup in pipes or water heaters. Nothing in either report mentions disposals, so take that as a reason to look, not a rule. Once the old discharge tube and trap are apart, check the inside for crusty white or tan scale and swap tired washers.

To ask about your own water, find the right office first. Your bill comes from either the City Water Division at 6615 Passons Blvd or Pico Water District, depending on your address. For grease handling in the drain, ask that utility what it wants residents to do, because we have not verified any local rule and will not guess.

What a disposal will not do

A disposal grinds soft food scraps. It does not make grease vanish. Fat goes down warm, cools in the pipe and coats the wall, and that film is what slows a kitchen drain months later.

Keep cold water running for several seconds after you switch it off so the ground food travels past the trap. Skip fibrous scraps, big bones and pits, and wipe greasy pans into the trash first.

When the kitchen needs a plumber, not a weekend

We install and repair disposals across Pico Rivera and take calls in Montebello and Norwalk as well. Our garbage disposal repair service covers jams, leaks, dead units and new installs, and a quote with a clear price comes before the work starts.

If your sink also backs up into the other basin, the problem may be past the disposal. That is a job for Drain Cleaning rather than a new motor, and a new motor will not fix a blocked line. Our 24/7 line can sort out which one you have.

FAQ

Questions we hear most

Yes, if you are replacing a similar unit, the power is off and tested, and the drain is flowing well. A first install with new wiring is better left to a licensed pro.

Only if a dishwasher drains into the disposal. The inlet has a plastic plug inside that must be tapped out and removed, or the dishwasher will not empty.

Turn the power off, then turn the hex socket on the bottom of the unit back and forth with the wrench that came with it. Press the reset button after it spins freely. Never use your hand.

The flange putty or gasket probably is not seated evenly. Loosen the ring, reseat it with fresh putty and tighten in small turns around the circle. If it keeps weeping, have a plumber look before the cabinet floor is damaged.

Plan on two to four hours for a like-for-like swap if nothing fights you. A stuck mounting ring or a corroded trap adds time.

The City's Find Your Water Service Provider page has an address lookup map that shows the answer by color. Check it before you call anyone about hardness or water quality.
